Understanding Bluetooth

Understanding Bluetooth Review

Bluetooth was designed to allow low bandwidth wireless connections to become easy to use so even those who are new to wireless can use them. Version 1.1 of Bluetooth describes a low power, short range wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to send data at rates up to 720 kilobits a second.

Bluetooth is an industry standard communication of wireless, meaning that it enables the connection of other devices as well, such as cell phones, computers, digital cameras, and other types of electronic devices. The specification of Bluetooth defines a radio system and a 'stack" of protocol layers and profiles. The highest layer is the application layer, while the lowest layer is the radio.

Beginning iPad Application Development (Wrox Programmer to Programmer)

Beginning iPad Application Development (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) Review

A hands-on approach to iPad application development

Beginning iPad Application Development is written to help jumpstart beginning iPad developers. It covers the various topics in such a manner that you will progressively learn without being overwhelmed by the details. It adopts the philosophy that the best way to learn is by doing, hence the numerous Try It Out sections in all the chapters, which first show you how to build something and then explain how things work.

Although iPad programming is a huge topic, the aim for this book is to get you started with the fundamentals, and help you understand the underlying architecture of the SDK, and appreciate why things are done certain ways. After reading this book (and doing the exercises), you will be well equipped to tackle your next iPad programming challenge.

This book is for the beginning iPad developer who wants to start developing iPad applications using the Apple iPhone SDK. To truly benefit from this book, you should have some background in programming and at least be familiar with object-oriented programming concepts. If you are totally new to the Objective-C language, you might want to jump straight to Appendix D, which provides an overview of the language. Alternatively, you can use Appendix D as a quick reference while you tackle the various chapters, checking out the syntax as you try the exercises. Depending on your learning pattern, one of those approaches may work best for you.

What This Book Covers

This book covers the fundamentals of iPad programming using the iPhone SDK. It is divided into 18 chapters and four appendices.

Chapter 1: Getting Started with iPad Programming covers the various tools found in the iPhone SDK and explains their uses in iPad development.

Chapter 2: Write Your First Hello World! Application gets you started with Xcode and Interface Builder to build a Hello World application. The focus is on getting your hands dirty. More details on the various parts and components are covered in subsequent chapters.

Chapter 3: Views, Outlets, and Actionscovers the fundamental concepts of iPad programming: outlets and actions. You learn how outlets and actions allow your code to interact with the visual elements in Interface Builder and why they are an integral part of every iPad application. You will also learn about the various UI widgets known as views that make up the user interface of your iPad application.

Chapter 4: View Controllersdiscusses the various view controllers available in the iPhone SDK. You will learn how to develop different types of iPad applications - View-based, Window-based, Split View-based, as well as Tab Bar applications.

Chapter 5: Keyboard Inputsshows you how to deal with the virtual keyboard in your iPad. You see how to hide the keyboard on demand and how to ensure that your views are not blocked by the keyboard when it is displayed.

Chapter 6: Screen Rotationsdemonstrates how you can reorient your application's UI when the device is rotated. You learn about the various events that are fired when the device is rotated. You also learn how to force your application to display in a certain orientation.

Chapter 7: Using the Table View explores one of the most powerful views in the iPhone SDK - the Table view. The Table view is commonly used to display rows of data. In this chapter, you also learn how to implement search capabilities in your Table view.

Chapter 8: Application Preferences discusses the use of application settings to persist application preferences. Using application settings, you can access preferences related to your application through the Settings application available on the iPad.

Chapter 9: File Handling shows how you can persist your application data by saving the data to files in your application's sandbox directory. You also learn how to access the various folders available in your application sandbox.

Chapter 10: Database Storage Using SQLLite3 covers the use of the embedded SQLite3 database library to store your data.

Introduction to Bluetooth Technology: Market, Operation, Profiles, and Services

Introduction to Bluetooth Technology: Market, Operation, Profiles, and Services Review

This book explains what is Bluetooth technology and why it is important for so many types of consumer electronics devices. Since it was first officially standardized in 1999, the Bluetooth market has grown to more than 35 million devices per year.

You will find out how Bluetooth devices can automatically locate nearby Bluetooth devices, authenticates them, discover their capabilities, and the process used to setup connections with them. You will learn how the use of standard profiles allows Bluetooth devices from different manufacturers to communicate with each other and work together in the same way.

Bluetooth devices operate in the frequency band where other devices operate including wireless LAN, microwave ovens, cordless telephones, wireless video cameras, and others. This will explain how Bluetooth’s spread spectrum technology minimizes interference to and from other devices.

Bluetooth was designed to be a simple low power radio link to primarily replace cables for short-range connections. While the use of a simple design results in an efficient wireless communication device, it does mean that Bluetooth does not perform the same as other wireless technologies. You will discover in this book how Bluetooth compares to other technologies such as WLAN systems.

Bluetooth has several user programmable options including the ability to hide devices (non-discoverable) and the ability to require other users to authenticate before allowing other devices to connect to your device. In this book, you will learn about key options that you may set and how it may affect the operation of your Bluetooth device and applications.

Bluetooth continues to change. There have already been several revisions and more revisions are planned for the future. These revisions include faster data transmission rates, new profiles, and more.

Some of the most important topics featured in this book are:

• What is Bluetooth
• What types of products use Bluetooth technology
• How big is the Bluetooth marketplace
• How does Bluetooth work
• What are Profiles and why they are so important
• Why Bluetooth devices from different manufacturers can work with each other
• What happens when Bluetooth radios operate near other devices
• How does Bluetooth compare to other technologies such as WLAN
• Key options and how they can affect the operation of Bluetooth devices
• How is Bluetooth technology evolving

Car Stereo Guide

Car Stereo Guide Review

Car Stereo Guide. Introduction, For those who love tunes and the ability to take them along wherever you may roam, there are some great auto sound systems that allow you to basically plug in your favorite tunes to play as you go. Car Stereo Overview, When we hear the phrase car audio, we automatically assume that a person is taking about the sound system in their car or vehicle. Evolving Technology, Finding auto sound systems that can keep up with the constantly evolving technology of today is a real challenge for many car and sound enthusiasts not only around the nation but also around the world. Today’s Auto Sound Systems are more than Meets the Eye, The auto sound systems of today are much more involved and complicated than the simple car stereo and speakers of years long past. Today's sound systems have all kinds of bells and whistles that many us could have only imagined during our younger years. In fact, it is quite possible that many of us did imagine these and those imaginings are how they came to be. One thing you need to do before you even begin to put the auto sound system of your dreams together is learn what kinds of components exist, how they work together, and which ones you really think you need as part of your auto sound system and which components you honestly feel you can live without. The Speakers, Even if you’re not a car audio connoisseur, it’s easy to be impressed with a car stereo speaker while looking around in an expo or convention. They’re the first thing you’ll probably notice, they come in different colors, shapes and sizes. Those big throbbing concaves blaring incredibly low bass lines or cool little tweeters whistling out seething treble sounds. Car stereo speakers are interesting and very tempting to buy, especially the big loud ones. But big is not always the best. Each speaker has its own unique quality, intended use and price range. Some may also be better than others at certain things so it pays to investigate your type of car stereo amplifier or head unit before you finally decide on a car stereo speaker for your system. Amplifiers, With the increasing growth in the Tech Industry and the undeniable appearances of new and unique musicians, it is difficult not to get attracted to different approaches we can carry music and make it part of almost every second of our daily lives. Give that most of us spend increasing hours in our cars traveling from one place to another, many are now installing car audio amplifiers to bring music with us. Car amplifiers allow drivers to listen to their music on the road while still having the ability to hear what’s happening outside and inside of the vehicle. Even though many now own portable music playing devices, the increases safety car audio amplifiers provide as compared to straight connection to headphones are far more advantageous. The Importance of a Good Stereo System, If you spend a good deal of time in you car, and yes, the morning commute to work and the evening commute home each and every day definitely counts, you are probably more than slightly aware of the benefits of having a good auto sound system. Your sound system is your companion in your travels most of the time. Even those who have children often spend a great deal of time driving alone. Using your iPod, If you like to ipod your car - pump music on your ipod through your car stereo system - apart from changing to a brand new car that has ipod integration such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Volvo - there are other options available to you. Bluetooth, When shopping around for a Bluetooth car kit, make sure to compare prices as well as Bluetooth capabilities and accessories. Many different brand names are now competing with the Bluetooth car kit accessories field, so it pays to be patient and take the time to find just the right car kit to suit your needs. Auto Sound Systems One Piece at a Time, Car Stereo Guide.
